The Board of Education appreciates your interest in serving as a substitute in the Cecil County Public Schools. As a substitute, you will be replacing a permanent employee on a daily, on-call basis.
(Please read the information below about substituting and fingerprinting. The items highlighted in blue are links that will provide additional information.)
HOW DO I BECOME A SUBSTITUTE?
To become a Substitute you must follow these steps:
- Be at least 18 years of age to substitute in elementary or middle school and 21 years of age to substitute in high school.
- Have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
- Decide what type of substitute you want to become. You can be a substitute in a variety of areas, depending upon your qualifications. To become a substitute teacher or paraprofessional you MUST attend a one-day orientation class. Class dates and registration dates are listed below.
- Call Human Resources at (410) 996-5432 or (410) 996-5555 to register for an available orientation class and to schedule an appointment to be fingerprinted for a criminal background investigation. When you call to register for a class, a fingerprint appointment will be set up at that time. There is a fingerprint charge of $45.00 that is reimbursed to you after you have worked fifteen (15) times within one year of your fingerprint appointment. You will receive a reimbursement form with your receipt attached at the time of your appointment. You MUST turn in both forms to be reimbursed for this fee!
- *You do NOT need to attend the substitute orientation class if you hold a standard teaching certificate from any state and have been in the classroom wtihin the last five years OR you hold a Bachelor's or higher in education and have completed the student teaching requirements within the last five years OR if you are being placed in a long-term substituting assignment.
What should I bring when I come for my fingerprint appointment?
The day of your appointment you will need to bring:
- Payment for your fingerprint fee in the form of; Check or Money Order (no cash please).
- A valid Driver's License.
- A completed substitute information packet if you are NOT attending the orientation class. If you ARE attending the orientation class, please keep your substitute packet and hand it in the day of the class.
- Fingerprinting is done at our Central Office location: 201 Booth Street, Elkton, MD 21921. Your picture will be taken this day for an identification badge, please come prepared.
What should I bring when I come to the class?
The day of the orientation class you will need to bring:
- A completed substitute information packet along with a voided check for direct deposit.
- Your driver's license and one of the following unexpired items; original social security card, birth certificate or a passport for the Federal I-9 verification form.
- A copy of your transcripts or degree (only if you hold a Bachelor's degree or higher).
*If you have been fingerprinted, submitted your payment for your fingerprints and have turned in your COMPLETED substitute information packet; your identification badge will be given to you at the end of the class. PLEASE ALLOW ONE WEEK before you try to access the calling system.

When is the next available substitute class?
Below is a list of the substitute classes available for the 2009-10 school year, along with the date that you may call to register. Registration for any class will begin approximately 30 days prior to the class and will remain open until that class is filled. You MUST be registered and fingerprinted prior to attending an orientation class. We can not accept walk-ins; you will be turned away if the above requirements are not met.
